Child Enticement in Maryland

Maryland Family Law Lawyer

On average, 33 children every day are abducted by a non-family member and most of them are sexually assaulted before being released.

Child enticement is a serious crime and something every parent needs to be on the look out for. Child enticement is conduct (including an attempt or conspiracy to commit conduct) that equates to criminal sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, or anything else of this sort. Any adult that persuades, solicits, entices or lures by words, actions or through any sort of communication any minor for the purpose of engaging in sexual conduct may be found guilty of child enticement.

Keep in mind that enticement can take form electronically or in person. Children can be victims even if the encounter was through inappropriate discussions on internet chat rooms or game rooms which can result in criminal charges. Many times, the act of solicitation is enough to find guilt even if the person on the other end of the communication was posing as a minor, such as an undercover cop. If you are engaging in questionable internet conduct, it is important to be aware of the consequences that can come from it. Keep in mind that although no one can physically see you, your actions are still governed by both state and federal law.

In Maryland, a person commits the crime of child abduction by luring a child under the age of 16 away from home or from the child’s parents or guardian, or hiding or aiding a child who has been lured away, for the purpose of committing prostitution or a sex crime. For example, a man who helps his 15 year old girlfriend run away from home so she can become a prostitute. A conviction for child solicitation or abduction can have serious consequences, including prison time, fines and sex offender registration. If you are charged with such a crime, contact a Maryland criminal defense attorney.
